Move money between categories.

Every budget gets something wrong. Dinner out runs over, a bill comes in higher, and one category goes red. The fix isn't starting over. Take the money from a category that has some left, so the plan matches what really happened. In Classic Mode that's a few taps, and Ready to assign doesn't move.

Spot what needs money

Open the Budget tab. The header under Ready to assign counts what needs attention, such as 1 overspent or 2 underfunded.

The rows tell you which one. An overspent row has a red amount on the right, and its line reads what was spent against what it had, for example “$164.50 spent of $120.00”. A row with nothing spent that went negative because money was moved out of it reads “Overspent by $44.50”.

Tap the row, then Move money

Tap the overspent row. Its sheet opens with what you assigned this month, the month's activity and Available now, which is negative here. If the row has a target, the line under it reads “Overspent by $44.50. Assign more or move money in to cover it.”

At the bottom, next to Assign, tap Move money. Assign would take the money from Ready to assign. Move money takes it from another category instead.

🗓️ Which months
Move money shows on this month, next month, and earlier months back to the month your Classic budget started. Credit card rows under Credit Card Payments don't have it: what's assigned there records your card payments (the credit card guide explains why).

Pick the category it comes from, and move it

The Move money sheet has two directions at the top. For an overspent row it starts on Into Dining Out, with the amount already filled in as what the row is overspent by. You can type a different amount.

Under Take it from, every other spending category is listed with its group and what it has available. Pick one, and tap Move $44.50. Both rows change together. Dining Out is back to $0.00 and Groceries has $41.40 left. Ready to assign doesn't change.

Move $44.50
Into the red row, from one that has money. The amount starts at what's missing.

It works the other way too. On a row with money left, the sheet starts on Out of that category with its whole available amount, and the list is headed Move it to. Use that when a category came in under and another needs the room. Spense lets you move more than a row has, but that row then reads overspent. To take a move back, move the same amount the other way.

Or fund every underfunded target at once

When categories with targets still need money this month, the header shows a pill such as “2 underfunded · Fund $550.00”. The amount is what it would take to cover every overspent category and fill every target this month. If nothing is underfunded but a row is overspent, it reads just Fund $44.50.

Tap it, and Spense assigns from Ready to assign right away, with no preview, in this order:

  1. Overspent categories, back to $0.00.
  2. Targets with a due date, soonest first.
  3. Monthly targets.
  4. Savings goals with no date.

It stops when Ready to assign reaches $0, so with less money than the pill asks for, the last categories get part or nothing. With nothing in Ready to assign, Spense says “Ready to Assign is empty, so there is nothing to fund with.” To change one row afterwards, tap it and assign a different amount.

🦉 Coming from YNAB?
This works like YNAB's Auto-Assign “Underfunded”, in one tap: overspending first, then targets. One difference: YNAB's also funds credit card payment categories with what's left, and Spense's never does: what's assigned to a card row records your card payments, so it would count twice when the payment arrives. No target set yet? See Set a target on a category.
⏳ If you leave it red
You don't have to fix overspending the same day, but it doesn't carry forward as a negative. When the month closes, the row starts the next month at $0.00. What was overspent from a bank account or cash comes out of Ready to assign. What was overspent on a credit card shows up next month on that card's payment row, as card debt to pay. Moving money in before the month ends keeps both from happening.
✅
The plan matches what happened.
Overspending isn't a failure. It's information. Moving money says which category paid for it, so next month's numbers start true. If the same category runs over every month, give it more when you assign, or a target that asks for what it really costs.
