Find a transaction.

A charge you don't recognise, a refund you're waiting on, a receipt you need for a return. Recent transactions are a search away on the Spending tab. Older ones live with their month on the Budget tab, and this guide shows both, so nothing looks missing when it isn't.

Search on the Spending tab

Open the Spending tab. The filter row under the header starts with a box that says Search.... Type part of a name, such as costco, and the list narrows as you type. There's no button to press.

Search looks at two names: the clean merchant name Spense shows, and the bank's own description, the one that reads like “COSTCO WHSE #1234”. Capitals don't matter. It doesn't search amounts or category names; the chips in step 2 do that. Tap the × in the box to clear it.

2

Narrow it with the filter chips

Scroll the filter row sideways. Each chip opens a picker, turns solid purple once it's on, and shows what it's set to:

  • Date Range: tap 7d, 14d, 30d or 60d, or set a Start and an End on the calendar and tap Apply.
  • Account: any one of your accounts, linked or tracked by hand.
  • Category: open a category and pick one of its rows, or pick 🔄 Transfer or 💳 Card Payment at the top of the list.
  • Amount: Under $25, $25-100, $100-500 or $500+, or your own Minimum and Maximum. It matches money in and money out alike, so “$100-500” finds a $150 refund as well as a $150 purchase.

Chips stack with the search, so “costco” plus $100-500 finds only the big shops. With two or more on, a Clear All chip appears at the end of the row.

Older than two months? Go through the Budget tab

To stay quick, the Spending tab holds the last 60 days, and always all of last month. A Date Range that starts earlier than that comes back short or empty. The transactions aren't gone; that list just doesn't reach them. Every month's transactions are still on the Budget tab, under their category:

  1. Open the Budget tab and pick the month. In Auto, tap the month name next to the calendar icon. In Classic, use the arrows either side of the month, or tap it to pick one.
  2. Find the category the transaction was in and swipe that row to the right. Two buttons slide out: a target (Auto) or a pencil (Classic), then an eye.
  3. Tap the eye. A list opens with the category's name, the month and how many transactions it holds, such as “June 2026 • 3 transactions”. An older month takes a moment to load. Each one shows the bank's own description, the full date, and Debit or Credit.

🐟 Not sure which category it's in?
The Spending tab is quicker when it reaches: for anything in the last two months, search there first. For older ones, start with the category it most likely landed in. If the merchant turned up before, Spense probably put it in the same place. Filed it somewhere odd? Fix a category Spense got wrong.
✅
Found it.
Recent ones by search, older ones by month and category. If you look up the same kind of charge every month, give it a category of its own, so it's one swipe away next time.
Next up

Looking things up is half of a monthly money review. The other half is asking what the month's spending says. The spending tracking guide covers that, and so does The Spense Method.
