What is envelope budgeting?
Envelope budgeting is a proactive method where you allocate your income into different "envelopes" or categories before you spend. Each envelope has a specific purpose (groceries, dining, entertainment) and a set amount. When an envelope is empty, you stop spending in that category or move money from another envelope.
What's the difference between Free and Pro?
Free gives you envelope budgeting with manual transaction entry. Pro adds Plaid bank sync and two budgeting modes: Classic Mode (YNAB-style zero-sum budgeting where you approve each transaction) and Auto Mode (automatically creates categories and sets budgets for you). Pro costs $4.99/month or $49.99/year (save 17%).
Is my bank data secure?
Absolutely. We use Plaid for bank connections, which provides read-only access using bank-level 256-bit encryption. We never store your banking credentials, and all data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
Can I upgrade or cancel anytime?
Yes! You can upgrade to Pro or switch between monthly and yearly billing anytime. You can also cancel your Pro subscription whenever you want - you'll keep Pro features until the end of your billing period, then revert to Free.
How many bank accounts can I connect with Pro?
With Pro, you can connect unlimited bank accounts, credit cards, and other financial accounts through our secure Plaid integration. All your accounts sync automatically and transactions get categorized into your envelopes.
How is this different from other budgeting apps?
Most budgeting apps track where your money went (reactive). Spense helps you decide where your money goes before you spend it (proactive). Every dollar gets allocated to an envelope, preventing overspending and giving you complete control.
